LISBON -- Officials from the Columbiana County Board of Elections reported no issues during Tuesday's primary election, the last for Deputy Director Bryce Miner.
"Everything went smoothly. Poll workers did a fantastic job," Miner said, noting there were no problems from the snow in the morning either.
Miner admitted some bittersweet feelings as he helped to oversee his last election before leaving to become Columbiana's new deputy city administrator/deputy zoning inspector next month.
Born and raised in Columbiana, Miner recently announced he was resigning from the county Board of Elections effective April 5. He has served as deputy director since Feb. 4, 2019.
Looking around the room as volunteers carried in poll books and staff members sorted through ballots, Miner said, "I want to thank every single person who has helped us over the years on election night."
County Board of Elections Director Kim Fusco said Miner does all the IT work and he's been a big help since he's been her right hand.
"I'm really going to miss him. It's sad to see him leave," Fusco said.
He'll have two more meetings to attend with the board to wrap up the primary election. The board will meet at 1:30 p.m. March 27 to validate provisional ballots and then again at 1:30 p.m. April 3 to certify the official election results after the official count is done of all ballots cast.
According to Fusco, there are 83 provisional ballots that need reviewed to see if they're eligible to be counted. Provisionals are ballots cast by someone who may have moved so their eligibility has to be verified before their ballot can scanned.
The turnout Tuesday was lower than estimated by Fusco, but in the range that Miner had predicted, with 27.19 percent of overall registered voters casting ballots. Out of 17,657 ballots cast on Election Day and through early voting, 14,266 were Republican and 3,131 were Democratic, with 260 nonpartisan.
The number of Republican ballots cast outnumbered the number of Republican registered voters, which was 14,142, evidence of a cross over from Democratic and nonpartisan voters for this election.
Other numbers for registered voters were 5,327 Democratic and 45,459 out of the total 64,928 registered voters in the county.
