ST. CLAIR --The St. Clair Township Board of Trustees approved the hiring of a police officer Monday.
Chief Brian McKenzie hired Officer John P. Shaughnessy and requested approval of the trustees during this meeting to make official. Shaughnessy was sworn in by Judge Timothy McNichols Monday morning. All three trustees voted in favor of the hiring with a one-year probationary period.
McKenzie also told the trustees he had been working on changing the department's shifts from eight-hour shifts to 12-hour shifts. The Union (FOP) signed off on the change. McKenzie said the change must be posted for at least 21 days before it takes effect. The trustees requested time to research the change and tabled the requested until the April 8 meeting.
Road Supervisor Scott Barrett requested the trustees approve the following purchases: 220 ton of salt at $55.02 per ton for a total of $12,104.40 to finish off the township's salt contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT); 500 tons of #8 limestone for winter mix at $26.90 per ton for a total $13,450; 26,048 gallons of CRS2 at $2.80 per gallon for a total of $72,934; 900 ton of asphalt at $89 per ton for a total of $80,100; 750 ton of 6-inch slag at $39.10 per ton for a total of $29,325 --all for the chip and seal program.
Barrett also requested approval for $3,035.78 for an automatic transmission sensor and the water fuel sensor for the township's loader/backhoe.
The trustees approved all purchase requests.
Lt. Randy Schneider, Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department (CFVD) told the trustees the department was up 20 calls from where they were last year when they were at 40 calls. They are at 61 calls as of Monday for this year.
He also said they recently were awarded the Fire Marshal's Equipment grant to go towards water and rope rescue.
Lt. Jared Churchman, Glenmoor Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) said the department was about on average for calls this year compared to last year and wants to remind everyone that there is a burn ban. Several of the department's firefighters were on a brush fire for several hours with Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The chip and seal program will run from June 26-28 and will include portions of Annesley Road Y&O to state Route 26, Annesley Road to the Liverpool Township line, Westfield Avenue, Carter Street, Eastview Drive, Lakeview Circle, Plaza Drive, Homestead Boulevard, Orchard Drive, Greenfield Street, Church Street, Hill Avenue, Gipner and Montclair Drive for a total of 3.7 miles.
Resolutions to accept the amount and rates for the 2025 tax levies as determined by the Board of Commissioners, approving Columbiana County's 9-1-1 Final Plan and adopting annual appropriations were adopted with all in favor votes.
Bills totaling $223,285.20 and purchase orders for $120,000 were approved for payment.
The trustees adjourned into executive to discuss the township's contracts with GVFD and CVFD. The contract had previously been extended for sixty and following the executive session, the trustees voted to extend it for another 30 days.
The St. Clair Township Board of Trustees meets every other Monday at 4 p.m., at the St. Clair Township Government Building, 15442 Pugh Rd. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 8.
