Finals for the VEX IQ Robotics League, elementary and middle school division, were held at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center Feb. 10. Organized by the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, 48 teams competed representing eight school districts including Beaver Local, Crestview, Columbiana, Leetonia, Lisbon, East Palestine, East Liverpool and Southern Local. Qualifying for the 2024 Ohio VRC Middle School State Championship in Marion held last Saturday were award winners from East Liverpool, Columbiana, and Crestview. Advancing to national competition were the Columbiana A Team and the Crestview B Team. Both teams will compete in the 2024 VEX Robotics World Championship – VEX IQ Competition Middle School Event in Dallas, Texas on May 1. Two East Liverpool teams also had qualified for state, winning the Excellence Award in both elementary and middle school during the Feb. 10 county event. Columbiana and East Liverpool teams advanced for their win of the Teamwork Award. Columbiana also advanced as the highest-ranked team for the Robot Skills Challenge. Crestview advanced with its win of the Design Award. Beaver Local won the Create Award, recognizing a creative engineering design. The Build Award for the most well-constructed robot went to Crestview. The Energy Award for outstanding enthusiasm and excitement went to East Liverpool, as well as the Sportsmanship Award for the students' high degree of helpfulness on and off the competition field. The Judges Award went to Southern Local for overcoming challenges and displaying perseverance, as well as Southern Local earning the Think Award. Additionally, the Amaze Award went to Columbiana and the Inspire Award to Leetonia. Submitted material.
