EAST LIVERPOOL --The East Liverpool Community and Learning Center was packed full of children, parents and grandparents Saturday --all enjoying the Breakfast with the Easter Bunny.
Organizers for the event, Tami Drago, Marybeth Jones and Janie Smith were quite pleased with the turnout of 160 people. Marybeth is Safety Service Director Bill Jones's wife and Janie is the mayor's wife.
"We were literally hopeful if we would have gotten 100," Jones said. "We're shocked that we had this kind of a turnout. This is our first venture into anything like this. We are a new organization, a new group with a great group of volunteers committed to what we are doing."
The event which was hosted by the newly-formed East Liverpool Beautification Society and The Calcutta Area Garden Club was held to raise money for aesthetic improvements in East Liverpool and offered a variety of activities.
The $5 admission included breakfast, facepainting, Easter egg hunts, photos with the Easter Bunny a coloring contest with prizes, a jellybean counting contest with the prize being the jar of jellybeans and a stuffed bunny, crafts and a 50/50 drawing.
The funds raised will go towards the beautification of the Diamond area and streets downtown.
"We are trying to propose a project to get the historic lamp posts repainted and just overall in general beautification of the downtown as much as we possibly can with whatever monies we are able to raise," Jones said.
Many fundraisers/events planned. There will be a sale with candles depicting historic downtown Christmas pictures from the 1960s. The hope is to hold a big hometown Christmas this year -- that's why backers are starting so early with the fundraising. They are also considering a purse bingo fundraiser similar to that held recently by he East Liverpool Police Department. Also, wine tastings and golf outings.
Jones feels residents are ready for change and they hope to see a lot of changes coming.
