WELLSVILLE -- Fire Chief Barry Podwel told the Wellsville Village Council during Tuesday's meeting that he anticipates having a new full-time firefighter ready to be approved by the next council.
After the chief was given the go-ahead to hire a full-time firefighter and posted the position he received about 10 to 15 applications for it. He has been conducting interviews and has one more to do today.
Lt. Marsha Eisenhart told the council in her report that of the two cruisers recently purchased by the police department one is on the road and the one for the K9 is expected to be on the road in two to three weeks.
Village Administrator Jeff Cope told the council that there were several streets in the village that were too tight to have cars parked on both sides of the roads. The cars make it nearly impossible to get a school bus or fire truck down the roads.
Council member Keith Thorn told Cope an ordinance was being drafted to restrict parking to one side of the street on 8th, 14th and Commerce streets.
Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah said the village was doing better than expected on both spending and revenue.
Mayor Bob Boley said he has a meeting on Feb. 28 about the village hiring a housing inspector.
He also said that he and Eddie Murphey, director of the Wellsville Foundation, have been meeting with Jim Clark of Beaver Realtors regarding grants for the village. Clark can write small grants up to $10,000 and wants to do something for Wellsville, Murphy said.
There have been discussions about using the grant funding to purchase benches for Riverside Drive.
Boley requested that several council meetings sit on a committee with him and Murphy to decide the grant funding.
After a third and final reading, with an all-in favor vote the council approved the ordinance to establish the salary and other benefits for the village zoning administrator.
The council put on first reading legislation to approve the solid waste management plan for the Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Joint Solid Waste Management District. This is a five-year renewal of a 15-year plan.
The council approved the payment of bills of $345.26.
The council received a notice for the transfer of a liquor license for Peps Carryout from the Ohio Division of Liquor Control giving the village the option to request a hearing if they wanted to oppose the license transfer or not request a hearing. The council opted not to request a hearing.
Council member Karen Dash said she applied for a grant of $500 through Heritage Imaging to purchase plants for the gazebo and around the village.
The Wellsville Village Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in council chambers at Wellsville Village Hall, 1200 Main St. The next regular meeting is scheduled for March 5.
