WELLSVILLE -- Police Lt. Marsha Eisenhart told the Wellsville Village Council during Tuesday's meeting that retired K9 officer Chief passed away on Sunday and that as soon they got his remains back they would be having a service for him. Officer Joe Saraniti, who was K9 Chief's handler, does not know yet when that will be.
Mayor Bob Boley said the flag was flown at half-staff to honor K9 Chief.
Eisenhart also noted that the officers in the village would like to see mandatory drug testing for all employees who receive a paycheck from the village. She told council there was no drug testing, that she had been an employee for 30-some years and has never taken a drug test.
She also said the department needs a housing inspector to help them with all the riffraff in the village.
Council President Bill Taft said a housing inspector has previously been discussed.
Eisenhart replied that if the landlords were charged so much a year to have stuff inspected and have them come in to say who is living there, the village would be able to keep tabs on some of the stuff that is coming in and out of the village from other areas. She noted that the village was getting a lot of people from California, Texas, and even from China.
Eisenhart said she believes holding the landlords accountable would be a big help.
Eisenhart also asked if the village had considered moveable cameras with wi-fi that could be relocated around the village if needed to help cut down on the vandalism and other issues in the village.
Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah said she sent out all the January month-end reports to all of council and the department heads, finished filing the 2023 year-end report with the Auditor of State, uploaded all of 2023 transactions and financial statements to Ohio Checkbook. She also said the reports were available for the public to view at her office.
Boley said that the Christmas wreaths and decorations at the cemetery will be removed starting next week. Those who keep the pots they placed at the grave sites can pick them up. They will be placed at the side of the garage. Spring clean-up will be in April and they are getting the cemetery ready.
Boley and Eddie Murphey, director of the Wellsville Foundation, had a meeting with the Beaver Creek Realtors Association, and they discussed small grants for the possibility of replacing some of the benches that are bad on Riverside.
Boley wants to ask the businesses in Wellsville to donate small trees for the park.
Council Member Aaron Smith noted that the 100th anniversary of the park is coming up on June 28 and would like to have a festival or community picnic to celebrate.
There were no reports from the fire department, village administration or zoning.
There was only one piece of legislation put before council during the meeting and that was an ordinance to establish the salary and other benefits of the village zoning administrator. Council voted to put the ordinance on second reading.
Council approved the payment of bills in the amount $641.17.
Council Member Ryan Burgess requested an executive session to discuss a personnel claim. Council resumed the regular following the executive session with no action taken.
The Wellsville Village Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in council chambers inside Wellsville Village Hall, 1200 Main St. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 20.
