County auditor warns of scam

By MARY ANN GREIER 2 min read

LISBON -- The Columbiana County Auditor's Office is not calling residents to offer a gift card or cash -- it's a scam and Auditor Nancy Milliken said to just hang up.

"We just wanted to warn the public that if they get a call, it's a scam," she said.

Apparently someone is calling residents claiming to be from the county auditor's office and telling them to call a number they provide to receive a $100 gift card from the auditor's office and possibly an additional $1,000.

Auditor's office employees became aware of the issue Friday when a neighbor of a county treasurer's office employee called the worker and told her about the call from Columbiana County. In turn, the worker told auditor's office employees.

The caller ID reportedly said Columbiana County and the scam caller claimed to be with the county auditor's office. Employees said she didn't call.

Auditor's office employees placed a scam alert on the department's Facebook page advising "This is a scam!! Please do not give any banking info or personal info out to anyone."

Milliken said employees are trying to get the phone number that the resident was told to call and to notify the county sheriff's office. Her advice to residents is to ignore the call.

"We don't give out money and we don't call people about that," she said.
