Wellsville begins 2024 with a healthy carryover

WELLSVILLE -- During their first meeting of 2024, village council members learned from Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah that Wellsville's revenue carryover was up from the year before.
Wah explained that they entered the new year with $2.28 million, which was $280,000 up from 2023. She attributed much of that to revenue being 11 percent higher than expected in everything but cemetery, while expenses stayed on target. Among that carryover, $789,000 of that was in the General Fund with the bulk of the remainder being restricted through the village's Special Projects fund.
Before the body moved to its regular business, Columbiana County Municipal Court Judge Katelyn Dickey administered the oaths of office to mayor Bob Boley and then four of the council members, Karen Dash, Cindy Mick, Aaron Smith and Keith Thorn.
William Taft was re-elected president pro-tem, but he elected not to appoint any new committee assignments and will do that at a future date after gauging members' interests.
He currently oversees Finance Committee and will continue to do so, holding two meetings this month: one at 10 a.m. Friday at the fire station next door, which will be in executive session to discuss fire personnel hirings, and a second at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 in village hall to review next year's financial trend.
Also during the regular meeting, zoning inspector Rick Williams reminded citizens that contractors working in the village limits must be licensed, and it was time to renew those. He also reminded them to check with village hall to see what permits they may need before initiating projects.
Members also reminded citizens that paid reservations are required to use the pavilions in Hammond Park and inquired about posting signs stating that along with the contact information and related rules.
There was also discussion regarding enforcement of street parking, especially on the more narrow streets.
Wellsville council next will meet at 6 p.m. Jan. 16 in council chambers within village hall.
