LISBON — Third-grade students at McKinley Elementary celebrated becoming published authors for the second year in a row with a “publishing party” attended by family and faculty in the library Tuesday.

The book, “Steps to Doing What You’ve Always Wanted to Do (But Didn’t Know How)” was published in two volumes by Studentreasures Publishing in Topeka, Kansas, and delivered to the school on Tuesday.

Led by third-grade teacher David Guy, each student wrote and illustrated a short chapter on how to do various things like make a Tik-Tok video, how to tackle, how to drink water, how to give a dog a bath, and how to eat M&M’s. The chapters were then compiled into a 54-chapter book, split into two volumes.

Half of the class read the chapter they wrote and illustrated for faculty and family members at 10:30 a.m. and the other half read their chapters at 2 p.m. Intervention Specialist Beth Devine and Paraeducator Peggy Smith held the books up for the students as they read.

Most chapters started with the inquiry, “do you know how to…?” and ended with a funny statement like “next time you can wash a cat,” after the student first explained how to wash a dog.

“Do you like M&M’s? Follow these steps to eat M&M’s,” read Faith Fisher.

She then gave a brief history of M&M’s and the numbered steps for how to go to the store, buy them, pour them in a bowl, and eat them at home.

“Congratulations, you have learned how to eat M&M’s. You are the best at eating M&M’s,” Fisher read.

Students cheered on their classmates and encouraged them to stand up and read the chapter they wrote into a microphone at the back of the library.

“Hot off the presses,” McKinley Elementary Principal Dan Kemats said as he walked in with the box of newly published books, as the assembled students clapped and cheered. Guy then passed out copies of the books to the excited students prior to the readings.
