LEETONIA-- A room and contents fire in the basement of a home at 3124 Grafton Road in Leetonia was knocked down "fairly quickly" on Thursday afternoon, according to Leetonia Assistant Fire Chief Jason Hephner.
The homeowners were not at the residence when the fire started and discovered it upon arriving home.
Crews were dispatched at 2:43 p.m. and the fire was out before 4 p.m. The scene was clear by 6:15 p.m.
Upon arrival, the whole house was filled with smoke, Hephner said. Two firefighters entered the home with thermal imaging cameras to determine where the fire was and knocked it down "fairly quickly," he added.
The fire was located in a small area of the basement that sustained some fire damage. The rest of the house sustained smoke and water damage. Positive pressure fans were used to remove smoke from the house.
"It was a small fire but growing," Hephner said.
The cause of the blaze is currently unknown. The State Fire Marshal has been contacted to investigate.
Columbiana, Winona, and Lisbon fire departments responded for mutual aid. Ohio Edison was contacted to shut off electric service to the house.
