EAST PALESTINE — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency reported on Monday that a weekend gasoline leak at the Marathon in East Palestine doesn’t appear to have compromised nearby Sulfur Run.
“Ohio EPA returned to the site today, inspected both the outfall to Sulphur Run, not seeing any gasoline discharge, and the catch basins at the station, changing out sorbent material used to capture any remaining fuel,” EPA Media Coordinator Anthony Chenault said. “Ohio EPA continues to work with the station owner to address any residual fuel that may be in the storm sewer.”
The leak was discovered the Marathon Gas station at the intersection of Market Street and East Taggart around 5:30 p.m.
According to Chenault, East Palestine officials notified the Ohio EPA Sunday of a release of gasoline from a fuel dispenser at the station. Ohio EPA Emergency Response personnel responded to the scene and discovered that a person drove off from the station with the nozzle still in the vehicle. When the running nozzle hit the ground, it continued to release gasoline. A portion of the fuel entered the storm sewer catch basin. Gasoline was recovered from the ground and catch basin with only a small sheen being observed in Sulphur Run.
Water Superintendent Scott Wolfe told WKBN approximately 72 gallons leaked into catch basins and onto the street before the power was cut off from the pump.
Sulphur Run, which snakes throughout the village, is currently undergoing remediation for contamination related to chemicals released during last year’s Norfolk Southern train derailment.
