EAST LIVERPOOL -- East Liverpool boardmember Tamara Cooper told the other board members during Thursday's East Liverpool Board of Education meeting that with the new attendance software, the district is better able to track numbers and such.
One of the achievements they found out about was the drop in chronic absenteeism from 43.7% last year to 31.28% this year with LaCroft Elementary and Westgate Middle schools showing the biggest drops.
"This is pretty awesome and should be celebrated," Cooper said. "With the administration really focusing this year, all of our goals on attendance, really driving if you don't have the kids at school they can't learn."
Cooper noted that chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of the school year or two days a month.
District Superintendent Jonathan Ludwig said he was very impressed with the way the new Attendance K-12 software was able to break down some of the data so that the staff can better understand it and that there is a training for the staff for the software on Friday.
Ludwig also noted in his report to the board that discipline infractions, especially the ones that result with students in his office are down and that the STEM teams are doing well. They had very impressive numbers when they went to the county competition with over half the teams placing top in the county.
The board approved with an all-in-favor vote the treasurer's financial reports in the Cash Summary and Cash Received Report for Dec 2023 and Disbursement & Receipt Report for Dec 2023.
The board also approved the treasurer's recommendations for the board to pursue the purchase of two vans based on availability from the bids received through the Ohio Schools Council on Nov. 3, the district's renewal of the contract with ACCESS to provide internet, voice and agrees to purchase centralized VoIP services and non-E-rate eligible equipment and voicemail services, and a fundraising account for the Junior Senior High School Robotics Club.
The board approved the hiring of Lori Johnson for substitute food service/custodial/crossing guard and secretary; Erica Brown for substitute paraprofessional; Ann Inge, musical co director at a salary of $678.68; Samantha Ramsey, volunteer varsity assistant high school swimming and Brian Kopras, volunteer varsity assistant boys high school track.
The board also approved the superintendent's recommendations to provide special education related services for a court placed student at the Reserve School, to have the third-grade students complete their state testing in 2024-2025 using paper/pencil, the agreement with ECOESC to provide Literacy Coaching services to the district and to continue competitive inter-scholastic 7th-12th grade sports sanctioned by the OHSAA for the 2024-2025 school year.
The East Liverpool City School District Board of Education meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the district administration building. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 22.
