LISBON -- The Columbiana County commissioners on Wednesday approved an early birthday gift for Eva A. Smith, an East Liverpool woman who will celebrate 100 years of life on Feb. 10.
"Congratulations to Eva," Commissioner Tim Weigle said after reading a proclamation to honor her 100th birthday.
He said he was honored to be able to give the proclamation for the soon-to-be centenarian.
According to the proclamation, Eva was born in 1924 in East Liverpool, one of nine children born to John and Elizabeth Auerbach. She married the late Harry D. Smith on June 17, 1943 in East Liverpool and is a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in East Liverpool.
A homemaker, she raised four children, Diana, Donald, Michael and George Anthony, known as Tony, and has a dozen grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She loves to be with family and loves to play bingo, the proclamation said.
In other business, commissioners named deputy clerk Beth Duvall as the county loss control coordinator for 2024 and approved the hiring of Maureen Shields of East Palestine as a social service worker II in the social services division of the Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services following the recommendation of DJFS Director Rachel Ketterman.
Commissioners also approved a senior services levy contract amendment for Always Best Care for homemaker and home health aid and chore services, increasing the hourly rates for homemaker and home health aides from $18.54 per hour to $25 per hour and for chore aides from $19.05 per hour to $28 per hour. When asked about the increases, Ketterman explained that Always Best Care is a Medicaid provider and the rates were increased through Medicaid so they in turn had to increase the rates for the contract.
During last week's meeting, commissioners approved a new senior services levy contract for Clean Choice Maids for homemaker services from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2024 with a contract ceiling of $10,000.
For the healthy aging grant, contract ceilings were increased for home repair service providers MTJC, Inc. by $10,000 from $55,000 to $65,000 and Small Town USA by $10,000 from $25,000 to $35,000.
Ketterman also gave notice that a contract approved for Master Construction Co. in November by commissioners was obsolete since the company chose not to do the work. The contract was for home repair services for the healthy aging grant.
The commissioners approved multiple certifications and appropriations for offices in both the general fund and special funds.
The next commissioner meeting is 9 a.m. Jan. 31 at the downtown courthouse.
