COLUMBIANA -- The city's police department has been awarded a grant for new tasers.
The city was recently notified the police department was approved for a $29,643 justice assistance grant through the Office of Criminal Justice for the purchase of new tasers.
City Manager Lance Willard said the grant covers 75 percent of the cost of the equipment.
"We are very excited about that," he said.
He also told city council during the Dec. 19 meeting that some of the projects submitted by the city for the All Communities grant made it through the first round of grant requirements.
Specifically, he said that the building owned by Mark Brothers at the traffic square in the downtown that is targeted for renovation is going on to the second round of the grant process.
"We should know sometime in January," he said of whether the projects were approved.
The city has been discussing the All Communities grant for just over a year and working with the Columbiana County Development office, the county Port Authority, and the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association on the potential grant funding.
On another matter, Willard also said that the city will need to fill the open seat on the board of zoning appeals now that John Yenges is a member of council. Yenges was serving on the board prior to his appointment to council. Willard said letters of interest will be accepted until Jan. 11.
In other business, council approved:
Amending the city zoning ordinance to the extent of creating a new conditional use of public storage garages and yards within the C-4 intensive and automobile oriented commercial zoning district. A public hearing held during the meeting generated no public feedback.
An ordinance establishing regulars meeting dates for council, board and commissions for 2024.
A resolution for blanket employee dishonesty and faithful performance of duty policy coverage for all city employees.
An ordinance transferring $400,000 from the income tax fund, with $200,000 going to the general fund and $200,000 to the capital improvement fund for the payment of current expenses as they may arise.
An ordinance transferring $145,000 from the general fund, with $70,000 going to the park fund, $50,000 to the cemetery fund and $25,000 to the police pension fund for the payment of current expenses as they may arise.
An ordinance to make temporary appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures of the city for the first three months of 2024, ending March 31, 2024.
An ordinance accepting streets, curbs, and storm drains on portions of Hawkins Lane and Juniper Drive located in the Cedar Run subdivision no. 2.
An ordinance accepting streets, curbs and storm drains on Homestead Drive in Firestone Farms plats 1, 2, and 3.
