WELLSVILLE -- After 50 years spent in education, the Wellsville schools superintendent is stepping down at the end of the school year.
The school board Monday accepted the resignation of Richard E. Bereschik effective July 31, 2024.
Bereschik, who had previously retired and then returned to work, said it's all been good, but after 50 years it's time. Of those 50 years, he spent 47 in Wellsville, including 18 as a teacher and 32 as an administrator.
All the board members voiced their thoughts on how Bereschik has done great things for the district and will be missed when he resigns.
Bereschik asked the board to consider him returning as a substitute teacher during the August 2024 meeting. The board members were all in agreement that his returning as a substitute would be a great thing.
Bereschik noted that the board will have plenty of time to search for a superintendent who will be dedicated to the district.
Board members also thanked exiting board members Rick Salsbury and Austin Dalrymple for their service. Monday's meeting was their last as board members.
Dalrymple served on the board for four years and Salsbury served for eight years. Their seats will be filled by Jarrod Grimm, who also serves as fire chief for Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department, and Dale Palmer.
Salsbury, who will remain in his teaching position at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, said he may consider running again in the future if a position is available, but for now is looking forward to devoting more time to his family.
Board member Frank Williams Jr. was nominated to serve a president pro-tem for the board's organizational meeting to be held Jan. 8. Vote was unanimous with the exception of Williams who abstained.
During the new business portion of the meeting, the board approved a motion to accept the following monetary donations: Richard Williams to the Garfield Principal's Fund, $50; W Craig Inc. to the Garfield Principal's Fund, $250; Ashley Haddox to the Garfield Principal's Fund, $25; and Southern Ruritan to the Garfield Principal's Fund, $250.
During the finance portion of the meeting, the board approved the financial report, which included transfer and modification of fund and approved Then and Now Certificates.
The board also passed motions to approve a budget hearing to be immediately followed by the board's organizational and regular meetings to be held Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School Media Center.
The tax budget will be available for public inspection on Jan. 8.
Also, during the finance portion of the meeting motions were approved for a $500 bonus paid on Nov. 22 to Marie Martin, Amber Brown and Rita Koopman; the Columbiana County Educational Service Center contract addendum to add a one-on-one autism service at a rate of $250 per session; and the transfer of funds to the Garfield Elementary principal's account from the high school principal's account and the Daw Elementary principal's account for staff T-shirts (each transfer will amount to $446.67 and will be completed once the invoice is paid).
During the personnel portion of the meeting several motions previously passed regarding personnel were rescinded.
A motion to approve John Stoakes as varsity boys basketball assistant coach at the step one pay level was rescinded and a new motion was approved for Stoakes in the same position but at the step five salary level.
A motion to rescind Justin Gerren as step five wrestling coach was approved.
The board approved a motion for the following coaches: Randy Thrasher with a three-year contract at step five boys and girls high school track and Bobby Sim, step one jr. high basketball coach.
The following were approved as additions to the substitute list: Leslie Woodford, certificated; Joe Maczko, certificated; and Shery Allen, classified.
Nicole Camilletti was approved for the Varsity W Club at step one on the supplemental salary schedule and Paul Wright was approved as the maintenance supervisor with a two-year, seven-month contract.
The next regular meeting of the Wellsville Board of Education is scheduled for Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Wellsville Jr. Sr. High Media Center.
