LISBON -- After rejecting the first round of bids for slag, crushed limestone and ice control for 2024 on the advice of the county engineer's office and re-opening the bidding process, the Columbiana County commissioners received three bids during Wednesday's regular meeting.
Three companies -- East Fairfield Stone, Lafarge Great Lakes and Shelly Materials -- sent in sealed bids. The bids were read and will also be forwarded to the county engineer for consideration.
The commissioners also approved amended appropriations -- the county commissioners ($396,697) and auditor ($2,253,459) -- and reductions to both the county dog pound ($7,500) and water and sewer ($605,054).
In other matters, commissioners heard from Stevie Halverstadt of the Lisbon Landmark Foundation on plans for the Founder's Day Pancake Breakfast which will be held Feb. 17. In 2024, the village celebrates its 224th year and is the second oldest incorporated town in Ohio with only Marietta being established longer.
"We celebrate not only the village's age but also its history," Halverstadt said. "Feb. 17 is the actual day New Lisbon became the village we still are today. We were one of the first ones here in the state."
Halverstadt asked for the commissioners' help with the event, which will also include judging an art display from village elementary students.
In fiscal items, 10 now-and-then bills were presented and accepted and a fund transfer approved. A resolution of support letters for the expansion of high-speed internet by Comcast and Spectrum also approved, as was a liquor permit request from Elton's Pub and Restaurant LLC. Commissioners also approved the Columbiana County Public Defender Agreement with the non-profit Defendants Have Rights Inc., located in Wellsville.
The commissioners also moved to leave the meeting open with adjournment taking place no later than Friday at noon to deal with year-end matters as the week and 2024 draws to a close.
