LISBON -- The Columbia County Career and Tech Center (CCCTC) took another step forward in establishing its new Criminal Justice program for high school students by hiring the program's instructor at its board meeting on Tuesday. Columbiana County Sheriff Deputy Damin Beadnell will teach the course.
"We had six people interested in the position and interviewed four people that had the appropriate qualifications," CCCTC Assistant Superintendent Jeremy Corbisello said. "During the interview process, Damin demonstrated that he understands the importance of building relationships with our students."
The new program will launch in fall of 2024 and comes after heavy interest was expressed by area students coupled with the popularity of the adult education police academy. Last month, Corbisello said the center has been investigating and learning how to best provide a criminal justice program at the high school level. He said he had discussions with other career centers that offer criminal justice as well as with CCCTC adult ed coordinator Kelly Darney. He also met with the county sheriff and prosecutor to discuss course offerings and instructor requirements.
The Criminal Justice program will teach students about the legal system, law enforcement, crime prevention and build a solid foundation for a career in criminal justice. Students will participate in simulated crime-scene investigations, forensic
analysis and other hands-on activities that will prepare them for careers in security, dispatching or the police academy after graduation.
In other personnel matters, the board approved Destiny Hissom as a Registered Nurse Adult Education Instructor for 2024.
In financial items, the board accepted a $116,596 grant from the Ohio Work Ready Program, approved the November operating bills in the amount of $861,186.65 and accepted the financial statement, totalling $10,199,927.28.
The board also accepted a donation of miscellaneous material from Dearing Compressor & Pump Company to the welding program and reviewed several Adult Education Course of Study Programs as presented.
The board will next meet Jan. 16 in the Central Office Board Room at 7 p.m. for the organizational meeting followed immediately by the regular monthly meeting.
