COLUMBIANA -- The city is hoping to leverage the Compco Inc. expansion to earn grant funding for storm water improvements along West Railroad Street.
City Manager Lance Willard told city council earlier this month that he is seeking grant funding for improvements along West Railroad Street, which is where the manufacturing company is located.
"It's been in shambles for years. There is not much means of getting rid of storm water down there. It's very hard on the road," Willard said of the road.
He added that the city has contacted Jobs Ohio and they are offering a $1 million grant toward the road improvement.
Furthermore, the Ohio Department of Transportation is offering $200,000 in funding for the project.
"We are very thankful that Compco is committing the capital on their expansion and job creation. These other organizations are looking at helping us because of the job creation," Willard explained.
The ODOT funding is available through its road access program, he added.
Willard also said he is seeking an additional $500,000 through the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association's Appalachian Regional Commission funding.
City Council approved during the Nov. 7 meeting giving first reading to legislation authorizing Willard to seek the funding.
Willard said the project will cost anywhere between $2.1 or $2.6 million and include new storm water lines that will run to the creek.
"We want to thank Compco for committing to their expansion and job expansion making that all possible," he said.
