ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP -- St. Clair Township residents will be voting to decide which of two candidates they want to serve as township trustee.
The 5,458 registered voters in the township will decide between David J. McCoy, 59, 47296 Bell School Rd, and incumbent Jordan G. Williams, 39, 46353 Seville Lane.
David J. McCoy
McCoy is a 1983 graduate of Beaver Local Schools, has received training as a state firefighter and state arson investigator. He has been state certified through the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), trained as certified scaffold builder.
He has worked as a carpenter with local 171 for 38 years. He has held the position of job supervisor for Sharon Wastewater Treatment Facility, Hermitage Municipal Building, Parking Garage in Warren, Ohio Turnpike Toll Booth and Roadway, Poland Water Plant, Mill Jobs, Elkton Wastewater Treatment Facility, I-80 bridges over the Mahoning River and Columbiana County Jail foundation and site work.
In 2000, he became self-employed after he established McCoy Construction, an ODOT certified construction company whose work in Columbiana County includes box culvert replacements and bridges with the Sprucevale Road Bridge being the largest.
Additionally, he has served with the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department since 1979 and is currently the fire chief, a position he has held for seven years.
He is also a trustee for Beaver Youth Soccer.
He and his wife Lorie, who he has been married to since 1986, have raised four children and have two grandchildren.
McCoy has never previously held a public office nor lost an election for one and has not been appointed to a public body.
He believes that his qualifications for the position lie in his past experiences of 40 years in construction in which he has managed up to 62 works and managed jobs up to $7 million. He has worked with state, county, city and township contractors and is an experienced business owner.
McCoy said he is running for trustee because he wants "to better our community, help it grow and maintain it."
McCoy, who has never been convicted of a felony, said voters should elect him because he is the most qualified, experienced and tested.
Jordan G. Williams
Williams is a 2003 graduate of Beaver Local High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education from Kent State University and a Master of Science in Education Administration from Franciscan University of Steubenville.
He has worked in education for 15 years as a high school social studies teacher from 2009-2015 at Columbiana County Career and Technical School, high school assistant principal from 2015-2016 at Beaver Local School District and high school principal from 2016 to present at Columbiana County Career and Technical School.
Williams has been active in the community as a board member for St. Clair Travel and Tourism, member for the Columbiana County Health District Advisory Council, member of Little Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic Rivers Advisory Council, member of Beaver Local Schools Foundation Committee and is actively involved in coaching youth soccer and youth wrestling.
Williams and his wife Stacy are raising three children.
Williams has not lost an election for public office. He is currently serving his first time as a St. Clair Township trustee. He was elected to the four-year term which began Jan. 1, 2020.
He has not been appointed to any public body.
Williams said he considers his qualifications for the trustee position to be "a leadership style that is solution based and built on teamwork and relationships."
"Public service is the foundation of my life, as I have centered my professional and personal life around service to others," Williams said.
He noted that he values accountability, honesty and fiscal responsibility.
Williams said he is seeking reelection because he wants to positively impact the community. He said he believes his experiences have prepared him with knowledge and insight for making informed decisions and to lead the township.
"A deep-rooted commitment and passion for our community drive me. The community has provided me so much and has molded me into the person I am. I am honored to call St. Clair Township my home," Williams said. "I am excited about the future of our community and believe the best is yet to come."
Williams listed his three biggest accomplishments while in office as the completion of Columbia Drive, seeing the township thrive during his term with new businesses and housing developments and spearheading the development and update of the St. Clair Township government website.
"It has been a positive experience to partner with the board of trustees and fiscal officer, continuously seeking ways to maximize our resources to achieve the greatest positive impact for our community," Williams said.
Williams said the voters should elect him because he has experience and leadership skills that are needed for the township into the future, and he understands the importance of the fire, police and road departments.
"I will seek to maximize our safety service departments while still being efficient and fiscally responsible with our available resources," Williams said. "I am fair and impartial and will always address problems and make decisions based on the best interests of the entire township. My willingness to listen, embrace teamwork, collaborate with others and tirelessly work to reach a positive solution sets me apart."
