COLUMBIANA -- The city has been instructed to implement a registration for contractors working in the city.
City Manager Lance Willard told council during the Oct. 3 council meeting that the newly formed joint building department with Salem is recommending the registration.
Willard said the city will mirror what is already being done in Salem for contractor registration.
The joint building department is operated by the Sustainable Opportunity Development Center in Salem and contracts services to third-party agency Elevate Building Solutions, covering only commercial building projects.
The joint venture was established to provide a faster building permit process compared to the state.
In other matters, city council also approved a motion to declare Nov. 17 as Paul Rance Day in honor of his dedication to the annual Christmas Parade for several years.
Rance, 85, passed away Sept. 21 and was very involved in the community during his lifetime.
"Paul will be missed by all of us," Mayor Rick Noel said.
This year's Christmas Parade organized by the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 17, with the annual tree lighting to take place just before the event.
The parade will begin at Joshua Dixon Elementary School and end at Heartland Christian School.
Also during the meeting council passed an emergency resolution approving the appointment by the city manager for a deputy finance director.
Willard said that finance director Mike Harold will retire early next year and the deputy finance director will serve as his replacement.
Willard plans to announce the name of Harold's replacement during Tuesday's council meeting. That person will then begin serving in the deputy finance director position on Nov. 13.
