Wellsville BOE displeased over Head Start move
WELLSVILLE — Two Wellsville school board members Monday night said they are unhappy about losing the Head Start program.
School board members Rick Salsberry and Frank Williams said they wished to express great displeasure over the Head Start program being pulled out of the Wellsville School District and moved to Salineville.
In other business, Superintendent Richard Bereschik said that negotiations with the Wellsville Teacher Association wrapped up.
Additionally, Daw Middle School Custodian Ed Swogger said that the leak in the roof at the middle school had been repaired and showed no signs of leaking after the last two storms. Work is still in progress to move the classrooms and is expected to be done by Aug. 14 when the teachers return to the buildings.
Board members approved the following motions:
— approval of the 2023-2024 student handbooks for Daw Elementary and Garfield Elementary Schools,
— to enter into a contract with The Nutrition Group as the Food Service Management Company (FSMC) for the Wellsville Local School District,
— the plan for alternative make-up of calamity days (“blizzard bags”) for the 2023-2024 school year,
— approve the MCOECN HR Data Release Agreement (kiosk) for the 2023-2024 fiscal year,
— the license renewal for Meraki in the amount of $4406.10 for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
The contract with The Nutrition Group cost the district $100,000 a year but is expected to help the district’s cafeteria stay in the black and not end in the red in a couple of years and allows the district to continue to provide free breakfasts and lunches to all the district’s students as well as help write grants for cafeteria equipment.
The district has received three new pieces of cafeteria equipment that they would not have been able to purchase without the $55,000 grant obtained through the Nutrition Group.
For fiscal matters, board members approved to accept the treasurer’s report.
Also approved was the Treasurer Marcy Thompson to purchase the used laptop at fair market value of $915.
For personnel matters, resignations for full-time bus driver Nancy Clapper, effective Aug. 11, and Jr./Sr. High Intervention Specialist Jenny Bowyer were accepted.
Sheryll Hertzler was approved for hire as a level one bus driver.
The board adjourned into executive session to discuss personnel matters.
Upon return from executive session board member Chris Amato made a motion to pay Thompson on a per diem basis to come in and help when the board has questions or needs help in the treasurer’s office on an as needed basis and pay her for five additional days at her hourly rate for the extra hours she worked over the school year. The motion passed with an all-in-favor vote.
The Wellsville Board of Education meets the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the media center at the Jr. Sr. High School at 1 Bengal Blvd. The next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 21.
The district will hold a back-to-school bash on Aug. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. behind the high school.
