YOUNGSTOWN -- With no candidates certified to have their names appear on the Nov. 7 ballot, a number of races in Mahoning County will be decided by those who filed as write-ins.
Write-in candidates had until 4 p.m. Monday to file forms with the Mahoning County Board of Elections to seek offices. Only those who turned in paperwork by the deadline are eligible to be write-in candidates. Any other names on the write-in line are not counted under state law.
Smith Township Trustee Scott Showalter was the only candidate who filed for his seat, but the board ruled him ineligible Aug. 16.
Among those filing as write-ins for his seat are his wife, Julie, of 17111 W. Middletown Road, as well as Matt R. Hutton of 17933 Fairview Ave., a Beloit village councilman, and Kevin Bartchy of 17817 Fairview Ave.
Three write-in candidates also filed to run for Milton Township trustee, a position held by David Allen Tomaino.
Tomaino filed for re-election and wasn't certified because the number of signatures on the circulator statement of one of his three petitions wasn't included. But the board voted at 3:59 p.m. Monday to reinstate him to the ballot.
Among the three candidates who filed when it appeared the seat would be determined by write-ins were his son, Alex, of 18235 Lillian Drive; Brett R. Oxley of 14945 Robinson Road; and Tami Scott of 16728 Parkview St.
David Allen Tomaino said his son filed as a "backup plan" and plans to withdraw as a write-in candidate now that he's on the ballot.
The lone Green Township fiscal officer candidate wasn't certified because of petition issues. David A. Slagle of 5620 W. South Range Road, who is a township trustee not seeking re-election this year, was the only write-in candidate for the fiscal officer spot.
With two seats on the Boardman school board on the ballot, but only one incumbent filing, the other position will be decided by a write-in race between Tex Fischer of 323 Melrose Ave., the first vice chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Party; and Candace Rivera of 8314 Hitchcock Road.
Both candidates who filed for the two seats on the Western Reserve school board weren't certified to the ballot Aug. 16 by the board of elections. But only one candidate -- Kira Ramsey of 11027 Leffingwell Road -- filed as a write-in candidate.
The school board will have to appoint someone to the other seat in January.
The board also didn't certify the two candidates for the two seats on the South Range school board because of petition issues.
Four candidates filed as write-ins with the top two vote-getters winning the seats.
The candidates are: Tyler Bates of 9643 Beaver St., Richard J. Ferenchak of 115 Longview Circle, Jack Dawson of 13390 Lisbon Road and Samuel C. Freedy of 3160 W. Middletown Road.
