Lincoln Highway Buy Way Yard Sales
The 19th annual Lincoln Highway Buy Way Yard Sales will be held across the state Aug. 10 through 12. This novel idea began in 2005 and has spawned a variety of activities from Convoy, near the Indiana state line, to East Liverpool. A number of communities have group sales in public parks and other locations. The Lincoln Highway crosses Columbiana County through East Rochester, Kensington, Hanoverton, Lisbon, St. Clair Township, West Point, Glenmoor and East Liverpool. The historic Lincoln Highway was the first transcontinental road for automobile travel in the United States, dedicated in 1913 and extending from New York City's Times Square to San Francisco's Lincoln Park. Combined, various routes across Ohio comprise over 400 miles today.
Kids Crafting at Rodman Library
Rodman Public Library's monthly Kids Crafting program continues at 4 p.m. Aug. 31 when children ages 7 to 12 are invited to come to the Main Library in Alliance to create a rainbow sand art terrarium. All materials used during monthly kids crafting programs are provided for free thanks to the Friends of Rodman Public Library. Registration is required at rodmanlibrary.evanced.info/signup. Underground Railroad tour
The Salem Historical Society is offering a Underground Railroad tour on the Quakertown Trolley at 11 a.m. Aug. 19. The tour will last approximately an hour and half with loading at the Shaffer Library at 239 S. Lundy St. Cost is $15 per person and minimum of 15 is necessary. Call 330-337-8514 and reserve seats (leave a message and the call will be returned). The docent takes passengers back in time to the late 1850's. Following the sharing of many stories, the travelers will return to the 21st century with a better understanding of the plight of slaves, the working of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement that flourished in Salem prior to the Civil War. Since the homes are private and entrance not possible, flashed on a screen inside the trolley will be slides of the inside of the homes, Underground Railroad hiding places, and several abolitionists who lived in or visited them. The slides will also help clarify the historical information presented during the program.
Hanoverton community corn roast
The annual community corn roast in Hanoverton will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Hanoverton Fire Department building on Second Street. This dinner was started in 2014 by the former Mayor Dan Kibler, who is now deceased. The committee decided to continue it as an outreach to the community. The community corn roast provides a free meal to the community members and is made possible by the generous donations of attendees and local businesses.
