LISBON -- The Beaver Local School District is keeping an eye on state laws and their impact on education.
District Superintendent Eric Lowe said during this month's board of education meeting that the district is working to better understand some of new laws that impact education in the budget bill and what will need to be done in the district for those items.
The budget bill resulted in many changes to the public education sector, including funding, base pay for teachers, lunch programs, and more.
The Beaver Local School District has been following the matter closely in order to ensure it can align with new laws while also finding ways to maintain operational revenue in the coming years in light of some of those changes -- specifically with regards to funding.
Lowe also said during the meeting that he appreciated all of the hard work that went into the preparation for the new school year, specifically with regards to the custodial, transportation and maintenance staff in getting the building and buses ready.
He also thanked the Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio for its help with preparing professional development opportunities during the three opening days of in-service for staff.
He said the district was "very excited" to have author Thomas Murray present to all staff in the district.
Murray is author of "Personal and Authentic," and Lowe said that staff focused on a centralized theme of "Believe" while they conducted a variety of learning activities together during the in-service days prior to the start of the school year.
The district also held a new hire in-service day for staff and had seven new staff members attend, Lowe said.
The in-service focused on district policies, procedure and items to assist in their transition to the district.
Lowe thanked the Beaver Local Education Association for supporting the in-service and providing lunch for staff members.
In other business during the meeting the board approved:
-- The student iPad user agreement for the 2023-24 school year.
-- The bus route master schedule.
-- The agreement with Columbiana County Educational Service Center to participate in Project Inspire for the 2023-24 school year.
-- A resolution on intent not to provide Career-Technical Education for seventh and eighth grades.
-- A resolution to Appoint Legal Counsel for the 2023-24 school year.
-- Adult meal prices, with breakfast set at $2.75 and lunch set at $4.05.
-- A NEOLA Select Agreement.
-- A supplemental contract for John Miller as girls golf coach
-- The resignation of Michael Cunningham as custodian, effective immediately.
-- Shandon Mackall as bus driver, effective July 17, 2023.
-- Several people as substitutes.
-- Raymond Meek as bus driver.
