SALEM -- The riders of Salem AMVETS Post 45 and Washingtonville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5532 came together to support a program honoring local veterans in hospice care.
"If veterans organizations do anything, it's supporting veterans. I can't think of a better cause than supporting veterans in poor health or near the end of their accomplished lives," said Salem AMVETS Post 45 Riders President Eddie Kirkland.
According to a press release, the Salem AMVETS Riders and the Washingtonville VFW Tuesday presented a donation of $6,000 to the Community Hospice Veterans Program. This program offers local veterans in hospice care the recognition and appreciation they deserve for serving their country. Typically, they are presented a flag, service pin, letters of recognition from governmental leaders and even a small ceremony if they wish.
"Sometimes it's one last thank you for your service," said Kirkland.
The funds were raised during a ride from Washingtonville to the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park in Clinton, Ohio, which concluded at the Salem Amvets Post 45 for dinner, sponsored by Boardman Mission BBQ, and featured an auction, door prizes, raffles and music. The event received donations from several organizations including Alliance American Legion post 166, Salem AMVETS Post 45, Salem VFW Post 892, Washingtonville VFW Post 5532 and Grover Gaming.
"These riders and organizations recognized a need and came together to exceed expectations in raising funds for veterans," said Kirkland.
The Salem AMVETS Riders are also now collecting donations as planning begins for the annual Poker Run Sept. 16, in support of Save22. The riders can be followed on Facebook to keep up to date with all of the charitable work they do supporting local veterans and are always welcoming any rider or spouse eligible for w membership.
