HANOVERTON – The United FFA chapter held “Food for America” May 30 during the school day. The program was in conjunction with United Elementary School’s PBIS end-of-the-year carnival, a celebration for a job well done this school year. United Elementary students were invited to walk through the agricultural classroom and shop where they were greeted by livestock and pets that FFA students had on display. Students brought in Holstein calves, a jersey dairy cow, angus beef cow-calf pair, a pony, ewe lambs, goats, chickens, geese, ducks, a rabbit and a turtle.

“The students enjoy petting the animals that they normally don’t see; however, these programs are important for not only students but also adults,” said United FFA Advisor Tyler Gentry. “Even though we are a very rural school, more than half of the students have never been on a farm, and several have never even seen a cow in real life. Our goal is to help bridge the gap between producer and consumer.”

Over 600 students, teachers and guests attended to learn about each of the animals, what they produce, how to feed them and how their food is raised. United High School FFA members supervised and taught students about the animals as they walked through. Each student involved left feeling more knowledgeable about where their food comes from and the older students who volunteered felt accomplished in teaching about things they are passionate about.
