The Bee City USA - Salem committee has announced activities and programs that will be offered at three separate locations in Salem during National Pollinator Week, which will be celebrated this year between June 19-25.
Salem is in its third year as being recognized as a Bee City USA community and is one of only 11 cities in Ohio with this recognition. Check out the Bee City USA-Salem Facebook page for more information.
Monday, June 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the Pollinator Garden in Waterworth Memorial Park will be "Meet the Pollinators" with fun crafts for kids including creating a pollinator replica. Learn about abundant local pollinators and identify species of beneficial plants and insects in the Pollinator Garden. Light refreshments will be available.
Wednesday, June 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Smucker House (271 S. Broadway Ave.). An evening of informed discussion with Lori Mowad followed by a self-guided Pollinator Garden tour. Moward brings a true love of pollinators as a member of the Columbiana/Mahoning Counties Beekeepers Association. She has been an educator with the Poland Schools for 15-plus years and a member of the Fellow Riverside Gardens for four years where she donated time and hives for the beekeeping program. She is also an educator at the Lake Club of North Lima. She has been an educator speaking about bees for ladies clubs, 4-H, nursing homes and at schools. At the Canfield Fair, you will find her teaching behind the educational bee booth and playing pollinator games with the children on Thursday's educational day at the fair. She will answer questions from her master gardener and beekeeping experiences.
Friday, June 23 at 5 p.m. at the Burchfield Homestead (867 E. Fourth St) will be its Annual Pollinator Garden Open House. Activities and programs include Art by Anissa DiLeo, Wild Roots and Muddy Boots, The Gypsy Weaver, FTV photography and musician Rick Bruckner. A relaxing evening of art an education beside the Burchfield Pollinator Garden.
Unable to book during National Pollinator Week due to her busy schedule and high demand, nationally-renowned OSU Extension Pollinator Educator Denise Ellsworth will visit Salem on Thursday June 29. This program will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Orashan Memorial Civic Center, also known as The Bandshell in Waterworth Memorial Park. The program is entitled "What's The Buzz? Supporting Bees in Your Backyard." Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Ellsworth is the program director for pollinator education for OSU and has an office at the Wooster Campus Science Building. She holds a Master of Science degree from OSU School of Natural Recourses with an emphasis in Environmental Education. She also has a Bachelor of Science degree from OSU, Dept. of Plant Pathology with a minor in Art History and Italian. Her Extension Specializations include honey bees, wild bees and other pollinators. Ellsworth has been the director of numerous researches, extension and outreach programs on topics related to honey bees, wild bees and pollinators. Her interests in wild bee ID, biology and conservation, pollinator habitat creation and plant, insect and bee phenology has taken her throughout the United States for speaking engagements.
