SALEM -- The Salem school board announced the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing saw exemplary licensing rates amongst 2022 graduates in its April meeting.
The school saw an incredible 100% passage rate of the NCLEX-PN, the national licensing exam for licensed nurse practitioners, from all 2022 graduating cohorts. This feat is only made more impressive by the fact that the average passage rate of the exam for 2022 was only 79.9%. Superintendent Sean Kirkland and the entire board congratulated the staff and students of the Hannah E. Mullins school for all their hard work and for their incredible achievement.
In addition to the announcement of this achievement the board also approved several administrative and personnel matters for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.
Personnel items approved included: a continuing contract for teacher Matthew Mowery; limited contracts for active teaching staff; the hire of up to five people for summer assistance in the maintenance department beginning with John McKee at a rate of $14.07 per hour; the appointment of Anthony Martinelli, Kyle Pontius and Mindy Hiltbrand as staff for the annual art show to be held May 11; the hire of Alexa Long as a certified substitute; the non-renewal of a contract for Buckeye art teacher Mindy Hiltbrand; Sabbatical leave for Sarah Hamilton-Phillips to participate in the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program; transfer of 17 sick days to Jennifer Woods; Family Medical Leave Act leave for Julie Fergason effective Aug. 21 through Sept. 29; athletic supplemental for head varsity boys soccer coach Travis Zeigler, head girls tennis coach Christijana Vucenovic, head varsity volleyball coach Michele Pieniazek, junior varsity volleyball coach Jennifer Neapolitan, and ninth grade volleyball coach Gabriella Allen; and non-athletic supplementals for the high school and junior high.
Administrative items approved included: use of the high school by the Columbiana County Board of Elections as a polling place for the May 2 election; the adoption of the Salem Senior High School registration guide; the class fee schedule for the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing; the appointment of the Mills-Holloway Insurance Agency for the Student Accident Insurance Program; the Jefferson County Educational Service Virtual Learning Academy Participation Agreement effective July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2028; a service agreement with Carefree Education Service Group LLC for 50 days of mathematics curriculum support beginning Aug. 1 pending available grant funding; the transfer of $181,427.54 from the General Fund to the Termination Benefits Fund; and the return of advances from the Secondary Transition Grant back to the General Fund totaling $904.
The board of education will meet next at 7 p.m. May 15.
