Garfield Elementary dedicates learning center

WELLSVILLE -- The faculty and students of Garfield Elementary School wrapped up the 2022-2023 with a year-end block party and dedication for the school's new Outdoor Learning Center.
The event, held at the school Thursday, featured a variety of activities of the students including cornhole games, sidewalk chalk drawing, inflatables a DJ, hot dogs, popcorn, snow cones and more.
During the block party, a ribbon cutting and dedication for the school's new Outdoor Learning Center, which was the brain child of Principal Lisa Ferguson, was held.
The Outdoor Learning Center gives the students to participate in hands-on learning projects outdoors.
Wellsville school board member Rick Salsberry said the Outdoor Learning Center was more than the plants which have been planted by students in each grade level, but it was a chance for students to get out of the boundaries of a classroom and get outside, get some fresh air and get a great learning experience not just from a book or a laptop, but by being outside doing things with their hands and learning lifelong skills.
Ann Chamberlain, long-term substitute teacher and gardener, said she has had a great time bringing the students over to the Outdoor Learning Center where they have been planting radishes, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and enjoying watering and cultivating the plants.
"The thing that I love about is that they are learning that everybody and anybody can grow things and I think that is part of the lesson here," Chamberlain said.
Prior to the ribbon cutting Ferguson invited everybody who had a role in getting the Outdoor Learning Center completed to take part in the ceremony.
According to Ferguson, there were representatives present from WTI, The Elks, The Columbiana County Land Bank, Consumers National Bank and The Calcutta Garden Club.
Ferguson told the contributors that without their kindness and generosity, the Outdoor Learning Center would have never happened.
The students, along with their families and community members, were invited to take a look around the Outdoor Learning Center.
