Wellsville FD receives some reimbursement from Norfolk Southern

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Fire Department received a check for $23,000 for reimbursement from Norfolk Southern for the hours department vehicles were at the derailment scene, the fuel used and payroll for the firefighters there.

Fire Chief Barry Podwel told Wellsville Village Council Tuesday that reimbursement for equipment and repairs needed for an engine will probably go through insurance. The volunteer fire department’s engine 13 came back from inspection with some issues that will need to be taken care of.

The seven fire fighters that were at the derailment scene, according to Podwel, have a process to go through for testing for exposure to toxic chemicals. Tests include urinalysis, bloodwork and pulmonary. They are supposed to go every three months for the first year.

Construction work on the fire department is nearly complete.

On April 15, fire fighters will have a flood wall training where they will spend the morning putting up and taking down the flood wall. Podwel said he has invited other departments such as Highland, Glenmoor, Calcutta, Liverpool Township and Irondale to participate. They have to show the Army Corps of Engineers that this is being done.

Mayor Bob Boley said that all decorations need to be removed from the cemetery by April 15 as they are starting clean up there.

Make a difference Day hosted by First Christian Church will be April 22 beginning at 8 a.m.

There are discussions of putting a boat storage area next to Save-A-Lot and possibly a new warehouse at Quality Liquid Feed.

Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah said she received an update from American Legal Publishing, the company that is codifying and putting online all the village’s ordinance, that they are making progress and should have a draft for the village administration to look over in May.

Bids for the reservoir are due back to the village office by 3 p.m. on April 10. Bid opening will be April 11 at 10 a.m. There have been five bid packages picked.

Council member Karen Dash said she handed out packets regarding a building inspector for council members to look over.

An ordinance was passed to increase appropriations for the current expenses for the village and a resolution was adopted authorizing the village’s participation in the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) road salt contracts awarded in 2023.

Wellsville Village Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Wellsville Administration Building, 1200 Main St. The next meeting is scheduled for April 18.
