YOUNGSTOWN -- Aimee Loveland, 53, and Samuel Sweely, 58, both of Ohio Avenue in Sebring, pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor child endangering for locking a girl in her room and nailing her windows shut in January.
Prosecutors are recommending that Loveland and Sweely get probation in the case.
They were each indicted on charges of felony child endangering and misdemeanor domestic violence.
Sebring police said the couple called police Jan. 3 to say the girl had been unruly and they "could not handle it any more."
Sweely asked police what would happen if he left the girl at the police station, which the report states police advised against.
The officer had to go to another call but then met up with the couple at their home. They told police they had gotten into an argument with the girl, who had left home. The report states police brought ambulance personnel to the home.
The girl told ambulance personnel she wanted to get out of the house, according to a police report. She said the couple reversed the door handle on her bedroom door so they could lock her inside and had nailed the windows shut.
Police took photos of the room, according to a report. Sweely told police the door and window ideas were suggested by one of the girl's counselors.
The girl was taken to Alliance Community Hospital, and the case was forwarded to Mahoning County Children's Services.
Loveland and Sweely will be sentenced June 7. Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ordered Loveland and Sweely to have no contact with the victim.
