Perry Twp. residents reminded about levy renewal Tuesday

By MORGAN AHART 3 min read

PERRY TOWNSHIP -- During its Monday meeting, the board of trustees reminded residents the township has a levy renewal on the ballot and a new polling station for the May 2 special election.

The 1.5 mill Police and Safety Fund Levy generates approximately $140,000 for the township annually, with the funds being used to purchase necessary safety equipment for the police and fire departments. It should be noted that as the current ballot issue is a renewal rather than a new tax, residents would not pay any more than they already are should the issue pass.

Board of Trustees Chairman Steve Bailey was hopeful voters would be in favor of the renewal, noting that in years prior the voters had approved the renewal with rates of 60% or higher in favor.

"Hopefully the residents support the township and the police and fire departments like they have in the past," he said.

Trustee Jim Armeni reminded residents ahead of the election next week that the township garage located at the corner of Depot Road and Snyder Road is now only a backup polling station. Any residents who voted there previously will now have the Church at the Center on South Lincoln as their polling station. Armeni said that any residents affected should have already received notice of the change by mail from the Columbiana County Board of Elections. However, in addition to this notice the board of elections will also place a sign on the door at the building re-directing voters to their appropriate polling place.

Bailey also wanted to remind residents that the Perry Township Fire Department will be hosting its annual pancake breakfast at the Salem Eagles Club this Sunday, April 29, from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

Trustee Tony Ieropoli said that all pickups and street sweeping had been completed as part of the township's annual spring cleanup. The township filled three dumpsters, which was roughly the same amount collected last year. However, Ieropoli said that he could remember previous years when the township had completely filled eight dumpsters during the program.

In personnel matters, following discussion at their previous meeting, trustees approved the appointment of officer Jon Preston Straney as the department's officer on the Columbiana County Drug Enforcement Task Force on a part-time basis effective April 24.

Other action approved included: the award of the $1,500 NOPEC Community Sponsor Grant to the Brightside Project; and the purchase of Veridian Fire Armor Gloves for $600 for the fire department.

The Board of Trustees will meet next at 4 p.m. May 8.
