SALEM -- The Burchfield Homestead is excited to introduce the public to its newest program.
Burchfield's Footsteps is a new QR code guided walking tour that will help residents discover and learn about the work of the globally respected watercolor artist, many of whose pieces were inspired by the city.
Made possible by the combined efforts of the homestead's volunteers, Museum Curator Charyl Mattevi and Web Designer Irene Barnes, the tour features eight host sites, each of which served as the inspiration for one of Burchfield's paintings, with a QR code that will provide participants with information on that painting.
The host locations and the paintings they inspired include: The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and "The Edge of Town;" Ezio's Italian Restaurant and "The Interurban Line;" The Salem High School Alumni Association and "The February Thaw;" Naragon Law Office and "Main St. Salem – Winter Day;" Fairway Mortgage and "Three Days Rain;" Crooked Tree Studio and "Back Alley No. 2" which is also known as "Twilight in the Alley;" Hofmeister Realty and "Church Bells Ringing, Rainy Winter Night;" and The Salem Public Library and "The Three Trees."
In addition to serving as a host site the library also participated in bringing the program to fruition with Library Director Brad Stephens and Web Designer Carla White also acting as collaborators in the project. The library also holds and displays several noteworthy original works by Burchfield in their collections, including an archival print of the painting it inspired "The Three Trees."
Participants that want to see more of and learn more about Burchfield's work and the local sites that inspired them should visit the Burchfield Homestead at 867 E. 4th St. on Sundays from May through October.
