EAST LIVERPOOL — On the morning of Feb. 9, East Liverpool High School automotive teacher (and president of East Liverpool City Council) John Torma was walking from the Career Tech building across the parking lot to the main entrance of East Liverpool High School for a meeting. During that two-minute trek across campus, Torma collapsed on the entrance ramp and became unresponsive.

Ten staff members of the East Liverpool City Schools without hesitation immediately began performing CPR. Their quick response with early CPR, rapid defibrillation and notification of EMS saved the life of Torma.

According to Superintendent Jonathan Ludwig, “In my 25 years in education, I have never witnessed team work toward a common goal as swiftly and efficiently as you did that day. Today we recognize the following staff members in their heroic efforts: Ryan Willis, Dannette Baker, Heidi Miller, Jason Duke, Scott Rogers, Jay Kiger, Nicole Dozier, John Shaughness, Bryian Burson and Baney Willis.”

ELHS Career & Technical Education Junior Level students have the opportunity to earn their First Aid and CPR Industry Credential as part of their academic training. Successful completion of the week-long training program results in a certification from the American Heart Association- Heartsaver (First Aid, CPR & AED) for K-12 Schools.

On Wednesday, the district welcomed Torma and his daughter, Misty, back to campus to celebrate the staff members and their heroic actions. School board members Matt Handley and Tamar Cooper attended, Jason Croxall photographed the event and Food Service Director Joy Bock provided raspberry torte for the celebratory lunch.

Starting at $2.99/week.
