United school board approves the 2023-2024 school calendar

HANOVERTON – The United Local school board this month approved the 2023-2024 school calendar.

The first day for students Aug. 28, last day May 31 and commencement May 26.

In other business, the board approved a contract for Hostetler as Superintendent effective Aug. 1, 2023 through July 31, 2028; and a contract addendum to Treasurer Melissa Baker’s contract through July 31, 2026. The contracts include a paid holiday for Juneteenth.

The board also approved the grant for the school bus purchase program. United Local was selected for a School Bus Purchase Program award. House Bill 110 provided $50 million for school districts to replace older school buses. The Ohio Department of Education has awarded the district $135,000 to purchase and replace three buses. Two buses have been previously purchased. One bus has been on order for over a year and has not been received yet. The last bus for the grant is supposed to be delivered in March so that the district can use the remaining grant money. The district has remaining grant funds of $4,5079.20.

Also at the meeting, the board approved field trips for the second grade to Fannie May Chocolate Feb. 16 and fourth grade to McKinley Museum May 31; the chartered bus trip for the high school choir to Splash Lagoon in Erie, Pa., replacing the trip to Virginia Beach in April; and the sixth-grade “Save the Earth Project” focused on middle school math, ELA, science and social students at a cost of $2,000, which will incorporate the study of honeybees.

Additionally, the board accepted donations of $50 from Frank Baker for the Backpack Program, $200 from Hall Family for Community Outreach, $200 from United Athletic Boosters for girls golf, $400 from United Athletic Boosters for cross country, $1,000 from the United Athletic Boosters for football, $1,000 from United Athletic Boosters for boys soccer, $1,697.40 from United Athletic Boosters for baseball Myrtle Beach trip, $130 from Ruthann Rinto for softball, $50 from Ruthann Rinto for baseball Myrtle Beach trip; $4,433 from United Athletic Boosters for girls soccer and $44 from United Athletic Boosters for girls basketball.

The board also approved supplemental coaching contracts for the 2022-2023 school year to Ed Ridgeway for track coordinator, Todd Sarchet for boys tennis, Jordan Wrask for varsity boys track, Danielle Burch for varsity girls track, Joe Karmazin for assistant boys/girls track, Riley Fillman for assistant boys’girls track, Matt Brooks for assistant boys/girls track, Luke Williams for junior high boys track, Cade Wood for junior high boys assistant track, Megan Karmazin for junior high girls track, Sam Cope for junior high girls assistant track, Tim Hydrick for assistant baseball and Ben Black for assistant baseball.

The board also approved supplemental coaching contract for the 2023-2024 school year to Stacey Zines for weighlifting, DJ Ogilvie for weighlifting, Sarah Jones for varsity football cheerleading, Sarah Hodgson for varsity girls soccer, Troy Brunner for varsity volleyball, Todd Sarchet for varsity boys golf, Stacey Zines for varsity girls golf, Jennifer Brereton for varsity girls tennis, Joe Karmazin for varsity cross country and DJ Ogilvie for varsity football.
