SHS student remains in detention following gun charge

LISBON — A 17-year-old Salem High School student accused of bringing a gun to an after school meeting remains in detention at the Louis Tobin Attention Center pending arraignment, which is set for Jan. 30 in Columbiana County Juvenile Court.

Juvenile Court Administrator Dane Walton said a detention hearing was held Monday for the male teen, determining that placement at the detention center was proper and should continue.

The boy was taken into custody by Salem police officers Friday on a charge of conveyance of weapons on school property after school officials learned he may have taken a gun into the school Thursday while attending the OPTIONS program after normal school hours.

Another student tipped off school officials, who then notified the police department.

Salem Police Chief J.T. Panezott identified the weapon as a Hi-Point 45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was seized from the accused when police responded to his residence.

Walton referred questions regarding charges against the boy to the prosecutor’s office. County Assistant Prosecutor Abbey Minamyer when contacted said the case is under review for now.

Starting at $2.99/week.
