Perry Twp. approves bonus for new police officers

By MARY ANN GREIER 2 min read

SALEM -- Perry Township trustees voted Monday to offer a $1,500 bonus to new part-time police officers in an attempt to attract more to the department, but there is a catch.

To earn the bonus, a new officer must work 32 hours per month and will receive the first $750 after six months and then another $750 after one year of service.

"There's a lot of police openings right now," Trustee Chair Steve Bailey said, referring to departments throughout the area.

The Perry Township Police Department includes five full-time officers and two part-time officers, so the department is down a couple of part-timers.

Bailey said the reason for the one-time only bonus for a new part-time officer's first year is to try to increase the number of part-time officers.

In other business, trustees approved a resolution to participate with the Columbiana County Engineer for the 2022 paving project. Bailey said once they get a price, they'll determine what roads to do.

Trustees agreed to appropriate $4,500 in the fire department fund to cover some of the improvements to the concrete at the stations and agreed to send Dalton Hoover to volunteer firefighter 36-hour class for $800, retroactive to May 21, which is when the course began.

In zoning business, Zoning/Nuisance Office Jeff Christopher reported 12 zoning permits issued for a variety of projects this month, such as windows and sheds. He said there hasn't really been any new home construction, saying people are probably holding off hoping the prices for lumber and materials will go down.

He received two complaints for high grass on Springdale and Beechwood, but Trustee Jim Armeni said the site on Beechwood might have already been done.

Armeni reported that he confirmed the township can have a tire recycling event. Details will be determined at the next meeting on how to proceed. The next meeting will be 4 p.m. June 13 at the administration building on North Ellsworth Avenue.
