HANOVERTON - United Local School District has received an anonymous donation for $25,000. Treasurer Melissa Baker said this donor has been making contributions for at least the last six years since she has been with the district. In the past she said the money has been used to purchase band uniforms, volleyball nets, a speaker system and even classroom renovations.
She said typically the principals come up with ideas about what the district needs and then collaborate with the donor. It remains to be seen what this donation will purchase this year. "With a new building coming up, we don't want to spend any money on this building per se but there's so many other things," Baker said. "They're so generous. It's really exciting."
The board also approved a grant for the school bus purchase program at Wednesday's board of education meeting. United was selected for a School Bus Purchase Program award of $135,000 to replace older buses by purchasing new ones. The award is funded by $50 million from House Bill 110.
Baker said the district has already ordered two buses which are expected to arrive in April and plans to get the third bus in 2023.
The board also approved a measure to continue admitting inter-district transfer students through open enrollment. Currently there are 209 students at United through this policy and there are 87 United area students attending at other districts. Other approvals at the meeting included:
An agreement to authorize membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the 2022-2023 school year
The United Local Bully Incident Report for the first semester of 2021-2022
A high school choir field trip to Pittsburgh in May and a chartered bus trip for seniors to go to Cedar Point
Fundraiser requests for a pepperoni roll sale for junior and senior class/yearbook and a flower bulb sale for softball/the class of 2024
Employment of Thomas Clark as custodian effective as of Jan. 10 at step 0 of the board approved salary schedule
The supplemental resignation of Mackenzie Firth for varsity volleyball effective at the end of the 2021-2022 school year
Employing certified substitute Rynette Swanson of Hanoverton in general education and Luke Salmen of Salem as custodian, both pending completion of state requirements
An agreement between United and Kent State University's College Credit Plus Program for the 2022-2023 school year
