COLUMBIANA -- The entrepreneurship class of Columbiana High School led by Tricia Missos is tackling a new project during the 2021-2022 school year.
Students including Ava Bryant, Nick Gallo, Tori Long, Riley McElwain, Madison Burbick, Olivia Cmil, Eddie Clancy, Maxx Grommes and Trevor Dearing are planning improvements for the concession stands.
According to Missos, the concession stands cause quite a bit of congestion during games and school events. Entreprenuership students are working to relocate the concession stand area and improve services and decor.
Students intend on giving the new area a diner like feel with tiled flooring and an American vintage aesthetic. Projected construction costs for the upgrades are up to $18,000.
"It will be used during games; kids would also like to use it during the school day," Missos said.
Students have worked on design, researched product selection, construction costs and partnerships involving local businesses such as Funky Punky Cotton Candy and Hogans Bakery.
Products sold would include cotton candy, slushies, pretzels, popcorn and walking tacos.
"It's a way to make money for the school and the kids get a little bit of business experience, as well," Missos explained.
According to the research done by the entrepreneurship class, concession stands can contribute to increased game attendance.
Missos has observed students increase their understanding of planning and project management.
"There is a lot of things thrown at you that you maybe didn't think about from the beginning," Missos said. "Contracts that need to be looked at, OSHA compliance, all those compliances. There's a lot of things they had to look at."
