SALEM -- Paper leaf bags are now available for residents of the city of Salem and Perry Township to pick up at Salem City Hall.
Residents should use the building entrance at council chambers off of South Broadway, which will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday for leaf bag pickup, city Service/Safety Director Joe Cappuzzello said.
Mayor John Berlin and streets supervisor Jim Phillis both said the street department will begin picking up filled paper leaf bags from curbs beginning the week of Nov. 1. Final pickup will be done sometime in mid-December.
"We want everyone to use the paper bags," Berlin said.
The paper bags are more cost effective because it saves on the time labor has to spend picking them up. Plus they can be mulched bag and all. With plastic bags, workers have to rip them open and dump out the leaves.
Any residents using plastic bags will have their leaves picked up last.
Berlin stressed that the paper leaf bags are limited to just residents of the city and of Perry Township. City council and the Perry Township trustees both agreed to purchase the bags for their residents.
For the past several years, the Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Solid Waste District had been donating the bags to the communities, but this year the district did not get the grant that usually paid for them.
Leaf pickup for Perry Township will also start Nov. 1.
