COLUMBIANA–The Gardens at Hippley Village is welcoming autism families from Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull Counties Saturday.

Proactive Behavior Services is sponsoring 10-minute mini-sessions for autism family’s courtesy of Jens Photographic Memories from Leetonia. The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley will host the event.

Each family participating will receive a free sitting along with a 5×7 portrait and digital images.

Autism Society of Mahoning Valley Director Robin Suzelis looks forward to the family portrait sessions each year.

“It’s done in such a way that the parents feel good because they know it’s an autism society event so they are already feeling more relaxed and the kids know. There’s no perfection,” Suzelis said.

The portrait sessions give autism families access to something that may seem routine to many.

“It gives them a little piece of what a neuro-typical family just expects,” Suzelis explained.

Columbiana resident and gardener John Hippley wants the families to enjoy the garden during their photo sessions Saturday.

Hippley worked as a teacher for many years and relates to autism families.

“Enjoy themselves, things are here for everyone to enjoy,” Hippley remarked.

Spots for the photo sessions filled quickly this year. However, Suzelis hopes to increase awareness of the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley in Columbiana County.

“It’s supporting families in whatever way we can with programs and resources,” Suzelis said.

Families can attend monthly get togethers, virtual teen meet-ups and get help finding resources.

“We try to support the parents so that they can support their families.” Suzelis remarked.

“It’s really important to have an organization that does what we do,” Suzelis expressed.
