GOSHEN TOWNSHIP -- Community members are invited to get to know their safety service personnel this weekend.
The Goshen Police District is hosting a Community Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the township administration building, 14003 W. South Range Road (state Route 165), Salem. The event will include hot dogs and other refreshments, games and giveaways in addition to the chance to interact with police officers, fire fighters, paramedics and township officials.
"Our focus for the 2021 Community/Safety Day is all about bringing people together," Police Chief John Calko said. "We want the community to get to know us on a one-on-one basis."
The event will feature a police cruiser, the new road department truck, ambulances and fire trucks from the Damascus, Green Township and Beloit fire departments and the Salem K-9 team of Patrolman Steve LaRosa and Argo.
With an eye on increasing the department's presence in the community, Calko said the citizens should be applauded for their role in keeping their neighbors safe. This event is one way for the emergency services personnel and township officials to recognize that.
"We love the citizens in our community and we want to show them appreciation for the support they give us," Calko said.
The event is being funded with the township's NOPEC Community Energy Grant.
Coffee with a Cop
The police department has also scheduled its annual Coffee with a Cop event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at the administration building. Everyone from the public is invited to stop by and talk with officers as regular people with "no agenda, no speeches, just open and honest communication."
The department has been holding the event since 2018.
