EL events raise awareness, reduce stigma of drug-related deaths

EAST LIVERPOOL -- River Valley Organizing marked International Overdose Awareness Day with two community events Aug. 28. The events helped raise awareness, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, remember those who have died, and stimulate discussion about overdose prevention and drug policy.
"We're very happy with the fellowship that was created," said event organizer Thomas Powell. "Despite the heat, we had a very good turnout and many meaningful conversations."
The event kicked-off with a family-friendly Block Party at the Church of God, 431 Grant St. Attendees enjoyed live music, food, a dunk tank, and more. A Memorial Wall was also present at the event for families to commemorate their loved ones lost to overdose.
"It was really powerful seeing the names of our loved ones on the wall," said Powell. "It was a good reminder that no community is immune to overdose deaths and we all have to come together to do something about it."
The second part of the event consisted of an After Party at Finish Line Bar & Grille. A multitude of local artists performed live music across multiple genres for the attendees.
"We'd like to thank the community for all their support in the planning of this event," said Powell. "From the artists who performed to the supporters who donated to the basket raffle, and to those who attended, it wouldn't have been possible without them."
River Valley Organizing joined communities across the world in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day. There were almost 600 IOAD events of all kinds, held in 25 countries.
