United FFA
The United FFA held its annual banquet June 2 at the old West Elementary in East Rochester. Over 110 parents, guests and members attended, including special guests Rebecca Zeisler and Janet Duvall. Two United board members also in attendance included Denise Rhodes and Wendy Doyle. Three local chapters sent two representatives to the banquet including Southern Local, Columbiana County Career and Technical Center and Southeast. This year the United FFA chapter had the award ceremony covering from 2019 to 2020 and 2020 to 2021 due to no banquet last year as a result of Covid.
Members received awards for participation in the Green hand exam, nature trail work, work at the FFA alumni food co-op at the fair, general livestock judging, dairy judging, soil judging and parliamentary procedure. This year's Star Greenhand Award went to freshman Samara Martin and last year's Star Greenhand award went to Jacob Readshaw. To receive this award an active freshman FFA member must learn and know the FFA creed, motto and be the most active FFA member in the freshman class. The Star Chapter Farmer went to Mikey Bardo. Last year's star Chapter farmer was Bryan Himes. Star Agri-placement was Jacen Howell and last year's Star Agri-placement was Gabe Snyder.
Special guests Zeisler and Duvall became honorary members. Zeisler was elected Honorary Member because she helped the officers get organized and run the meetings better. She came to their meeting and even helped with decorative flower arrangements at the banquet. Duvall was elected Honorary Member for proctoring all of the FFA online contests and online exam portions of contests for prior years. She is also always willing to help make mailing labels and other tasks.
Several members in the past two years earned their state degrees. Members who received the degree were Bryan Himes, Jacen Howell, Bodey Kiko, Shelby Kornbau and Rowen Brinker. The club also had several American degrees the past two years. This degree is the highest degree that the National FFA Association can award a member. To receive this degree and FFA member must first get their State FFA Degree, graduate from high school, and must earn or invest over $10,000 in their agricultural job or project. The 2019 to 2020 American Degrees were Becky Bernet, Megan Drake, Josh Kataro and Jacob Kataro. The members who will receive their American Degrees this fall are Shelby Kornbau, Gabe Snyder and Bryan Himes.
The last part of the banquet was the installation of our new officers. There were six new officers installed and one member retained his office as president, Cody Cope. The new officers are vice president Brielle Rose, secretary Alexandria Householder, treasurer Makayla Craig, reporter Hayden Casto, student advisor Rowen Brinker and sentinel Matt Stoudt.

Lake Erie College
Zachary Brine of Salem has received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and will undergo internal medicine residency training with LECOM Health in Erie Pennsylvania.
Osteopathic medicine emphasizes a whole person approach to health care where physicians help each individual achieve wellness by focusing on health education as well as injury and disease prevention. Doctors of Osteopathic medicine provide all the benefits of modern medicine, including surgery and the use of technology to diagnose disease and evaluate injury while offering the added benefit of hands on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy called osteopathic manipulative medicine.
Fort Hays State
Kate Young of East Liverpool, Ohio was named to the Spring 2021 Dean's Honor Roll at Fort Hays State University. Kate is a Criminal Justice major. She finished the semester with a 3.75 grade point average.
Clarkson University
Taylor Rae Clayton of Alliance, a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2021 semester at Clarkson University. Presidential Scholars must achieve a minimum 3.80 grade-point average and carry at least 14 credit hours.
Baldwin Wallace
The following local students have been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2021 semester at Baldwin Wallace University, according to Provost Stephen D. Stahl. Any full-time student who achieves a GPA of at least 3.6 for 12 or more graded hours or part-time student who achieves a GPA of at least 3.6 for six or more graded hours in the fall or spring semester will be placed on the Dean's List.

Francis Scholarship
Twenty-two seniors throughout Mahoning County have been awarded the J.L. Francis Scholarship.
The scholarship, which provides $1,000 to each of its recipients, was established in honor of Mr. Jeffery Francis in 2006. The award is presented to one student in each of Mahoning County's public high schools, chartered Christian schools, one student from Ursuline High School, one from Cardinal Mooney High School, and one vocational student from the MCCTC and Youngstown Choffin.
Each school selects 10 students to apply for the scholarship. Students who maintained a 3.0 GPA and demonstrated a commitment to their communities through volunteer service are eligible for consideration. Each student then must submit a career essay, a letter of reference, and an application to be considered for the award.
The information submitted is then reviewed by the online application program and essays and letters are reviewed by Teaching and Learning team members at the Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio (ESCEO, formerly Mahoning County Educational Service Center). After thorough review, one student from each eligible district is awarded the J.L. Francis Scholarship.

Slippery Rock
Slippery Rock University has announced its dean's list for the spring 2021 semester. The dean's list consists of SRU undergraduate students who earned an adjusted semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, based on a schedule of at least 12 newly attempted and earned credits.

Ohio Connections
Nearly 400 graduating seniors from more than 70 counties across the state recently received their high school diplomas as members of Ohio Connections Academy's Class of 2021. Typically, the online public charter school hosts a traditional, in-person commencement ceremony, however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the graduation ceremony was held virtually.

The Salem Italian American Education Fund recently announced the recipients of its 2021 scholarship awards. Receiving $600 scholarships are Carly Best, Marco Ferry, Michaela Liptak, Hannah Yannucci, Carly Hall, Grant Menough, Halle Cochran, Taran Ferry, Hailey Lewis and Haleigh Brock.
Carly Best graduated from Salem High School and will enroll at Youngstown State University.
Marco Ferry graduated from Leetonia High School and will enroll at The Ohio State University.
Michaela Liptak graduated from Ravenna High School and will enroll at The Ohio State University.
Hannah Yannucci graduated from Salem High School and will enroll at Kent State University.

In the past 20 years, the fund has awarded $244,600 to 479 high school seniors and college students.
