Mt. Union scholars
ALLIANCE -- The University of Mount Union hosted its annual Student Celebration Honoring Our Latest Academic Research (SCHOLAR) Day in a hybrid in-person/virtual model April 20.
SCHOLAR Day is traditionally a campus-wide, day-long event filled with presentations showcasing academic excellence and scholarly research conducted by Mount Union students. While still adhering to Covid-19 safety protocols, Mount Union provided limited in-person attendance to the poster and formal presentations, while still offering a livestream option to those off-campus.
Tucker Cope III, a civil engineering major of Columbiana, was selected for work on a poster titled "Sustainable Erosion Control System."
Bailey Balderson, a public relations major of Alliance, was selected for work on a poster titled "RSM for U-M-YOU."
Brenna Walker, a public relations major of Beloit, was selected for work on a poster titled "RSM for U-M-YOU."
Teresa Woerther, a graphic design and marketing major of Alliance, was selected for work on a poster titled "As Time Passed: A four-part zine collection."
Wyatt Kohl, an athletic training major of E Rochester, was selected for work on a poster titled "The Ketogenic Diet as Treatment for Individuals Diagnosed with Epilepsy."
Olivia Buch, an art education and French major of Alliance, was selected for work on a poster titled "Through My Eyes."
Jenna Smith, an exercise science major of Beloit, was selected for work on a poster titled "Does Red Bull Increase Distance Traveled Among Aerobic Recreationally Active College-Aged Students?"
Jarod Hunter, a biology major of Sebring, was selected for work on a poster titled "Analyzing Biodiversity and Water Quality to Determine Overall Health of Ponds at the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center."
Alysha Mitzel, a human development and family science major of Alliance, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Which screen to watch: How distractions influence the grades of individuals in online learning."
Megan Denny, a criminal justice and Spanish major of Alliance, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Social Change and Surrealism in the Spanish Speaking World."
Dante Seruch, a psychology major of Sebring, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Political Party Affiliation & Risk Propensity."
Savannah Fuller, a psychology and criminal justice major of Alliance, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Political Party Affiliation & Risk Propensity."
John Madison, a history and political science major of Alliance, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "The Cold War Turned Hot: Douglas MacArthur's Impact on the Korean War and Beyond."
Kayla Sitler, a human development and family science major of Leetonia, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Adversity within the College Population During a Pandemic."
Mackenzie Wiley, an integrated media major of Alliance, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Dealing with Abuse Through Film."
Cassandra SierraValle, a psychology major of Alliance, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Emotions, Memory, and Significance."
Sarah Foster, a human development and family science major of Homeworth, was selected for work on a formal presentation titled "Emotions, Memory, and Significance."

SCHOLAR Day, which began in 2008, highlights the research projects of Mount Union's undergraduate and graduate students. The continued success of this academic tradition is made possible through the generous support of George '58 and Sally (Shrake '59) Stradley of Hartville, Ohio and the Donald and Alice Noble Foundation of Wooster, Ohio.
Kaelyn Mikes
Kaelyn Mikes, daughter of Maeve Valentino and Christopher Mikes of Sebring has been nominated for Junior National Honor Society. She will be inducted May, 17.
Kaelyn, a home schooler, was nominated by her core subject teachers when she was only 11 years old. She currently holds a 4.0 grade point average.
She is on Art In Motion Studio tap dance team. She loved helping the Tiny Tappers, until Covid brought so many changes.
Kaelyn also takes water and snacks to the Sebring fire department monthly. She is currently researching what she can do to help the Sebring police department's new K-9 unit.
Kaelyn's grandparents are Larry and Cheryl Valentino of Beloit. She is the great-granddaughter of Loyd Rubel and the late Nancy Rubel and the late William and Roxanne Mikes.
Tech intern progam needs businesses
The Columbiana County Educational Service Center's Business Advisory Council is the award recipient of a Tech Intern Pilot Program grant for this summer that will benefit students and businesses. The grant will allow businesses to employ high school graduates in IT and Computer Science and receive up to two-thirds of the student's pay in reimbursement. The program will benefit the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center students in the IT program and students enrolled in the AP Computer Science program.
The program is looking to partner with businesses centered around software development, data, IT infrastructure, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. This is an opportunity to influence the future of students in Columbiana County by encouraging goals toward learning on the job and upward mobility within an organization.
"We would like to have this potentially lead to full time employment, but the timetable is tight. We need businesses by May 21 to join with us," said John Dilling, Consultant for the CCESC. "This is a 'build as you grow' grant so we have limited time to find students" he said.
