Salineville has the grant, needs cops

SALINEVILLE — With problems finding additional manpower, Police Chief Matt Devlin asked for permission for overtime for the current police officers and himself.

Devlin told village council on Monday after receiving the $10,000 from the Edward Bryne Memorial Justice Assistance grant, the department has been attempting to hire additional officers. The grant is to give the department assistance to cover more shifts, especially late at night, to curtail crime and drug use within the village.

However, Devlin said they have been actively looking, but thus far unsuccessful in finding additional police officers, which will make it impossible to use the money at the current staffing levels unless the police officers can work additional shifts. Other departments in the area are also currently having difficulty hiring.

Devlin’s position usually only allows him to take comp time instead of overtime, but he asked for an exception to be made so he can help fill the shifts.

The grant runs through September and Devlin said he would hate not to be able to use the money when they really need the police coverage. Council approved the allowance for officers to work overtime as long as it can be covered by the grant and Devlin is to make certain they do not go over the $10,000 allotted.

Devlin, who just returned the beginning of April, also asked council to pay Sgt. Keith Evanoff the additional stipend they had paid him while Devlin was gone earlier this year through April. Devlin said there were some things Evanoff had been in the middle of when Devlin returned and Evanoff finished them up as Devlin caught up on new reporting system and other things. Council agreed to extend the stipend through April.

In other matters:

— Council approved rejoining the Columbiana County Major Crimes Task Force through the mutual aid agreement and approved signing the memorandum of understanding with the Emergency Medical Agency for the use of village equipment in the event of an emergency.

— The County Land Bank is expected to be working on the C and B Fuels site at the end of May and will be razing a property on East Main Street across from the village hall.

— Councilman Jim Wilson reported the streets department is requiring new weed wackers, but Councilwoman Sally Keating pointed out they just bought them new ones last year. Several council people questioned the need for the new equipment and also questioned when Wilson said they really need a used tractor and brush hog to mow at the ball field and along the edge of some roads in town.

Councilwoman Pam Tedeschi also reported some of the things the insurance company would like to see done, including repairs to the structural cracks at the salt and ash storage space.
