Columbiana and Crestview middle schools held a "penny war", the friendly competition has taken place for seven years.
Columbiana Middle School principal, Jason Martin and Crestview Principal, Allison Lemaster held a competition among students in the form of a "penny war".
"We want to encourage the kids to bring in money to help their classmates," said Lemaster.
Students participated by bringing pennies into their home room classes for points. If students wanted to sabotage another home room, the student could bring in cash to count negatively for the home room they intended to sabotage.
The proceeds from each building normally get donated to the American Cancer Society but this year is different.
There are four students between the school districts who are currently battling cancer, so, funds went directly to the families.
Crestview Middle School raised $2,332 and Columbiana Middle School raised $7,480.
Columbiana Middle School took this years trophy.
Other fundraising efforts make the total contribution towards Team Sam, a benefit for a seventh grade student battling cancer, $8000.
Anyone wishing to donate to the families are welcome to do so by visiting the front office of the respective middle school.
