Salem’s new at large councilman, Robert Merry, takes the oath administered by Salem Mayor John Berlin while his wife, Susan, holds the Bible. City council selected Merry last week to fill the unexpired term of former councilman Sal Salvino. Merry said he was pleased that council chose him and added, “I hope during my tenure I can serve the citizens of Salem to the best of my ability.” He was resigning his post on the city Planning Commission, which the mayor will have to fill. Berlin said he already has some possible candidates in mind that he will be calling. Merry’s first meeting on council will be tonight.
