New resource officer named for Columbiana schools

COLUMBIANA -- Superintendent Don Mook reported this week auxiliary officer Rich Burbick will be the new school resource officer for the district.
Burbick will bring his experience as a long-time substitute and auxiliary officer, transportation supervisor and mechanics instructor to the school resource officer position.
"I can't thank them enough, both the sheriff's department and the police department for stepping up in the absence of our resource officer and doing what they needed to do," said Mook
Staff and administration appreciated the insight and professionalism from the multiple officers who helped.
In addition to recognizing the local police department, Mook also wanted to commend high school students for being recognized by Ohio Superintendent Paolo DeMaria regarding their work with the Columbiana Corridor.
Kim Sharshan, elementary principal, suggested putting the video taken at the event on the district website for viewing.
Also Tuesday, district nurse Leslie Costal was presented the Key Clipper award for her dedication to the school district during the pandemic.
Costal was recognized for giving non-stop care while she multitasked communicating test results, contact tracing, and quarantine developments
"She not only communicated with administration and staff daily, she educated us. She helped us understand mandates, recommendations and events in perspective," said Sharshan.
Costal showed compassion, commitment to others and continues to be an ambassador for the school district, families and community
Mook was also awarded a Key Clipper award for his persistence and determination throughout the pandemic. Sharshan said in uncertain times Mook could keep staff and administration calm, focused and inspired.
In other matters, Mook discussed legislation that will require new and updated development training for staff. Other legislative matters included requiring training on epinephrine pen and glucagon administration training.
Sharshan suggested using the training materials vendor already utilized by the district to save money. Mook said he will consider this.
The legislation will also expand testing for dyslexia detection.
The legislation also indicates that after July 1 remote meetings for public bodies will be held in person.
In other matters, the school plans to start fundraising for a new stadium using PaySchools.
PaySchools is already used for school lunch accounts but will be expanded to accommodate students purchasing tickets to school events and other business.
Mook said PaySchools will allow the administration to raise funds and apply funds to school district accounts with increased accuracy.
In other business, Mook presented videos of students produced by Julie Bercik, public relations for both columbiana and Lisbon school districts, showcasing student art for the elementary Family Spring Fling event and a showcase for seniors.
The senior showcase videos will be released one at a time until the end of the school year.
