School Notes

Delainey Mellott

SALINEVILLE — Delainey Mellott, daughter of Rick and Jessica Mellott of East Liverpool, has been selected as the Kiwanis Student of the Month for February at Southern Local High School. She is ranked third in her graduating class with a 4.378 GPA.

Delainey has been an Honor Roll student throughout her high school career. She is an active member of National Honor Society, Varsity Club, President of Senior class and Student Council. She was on the 2019 Fall Homecoming Court and 2021 Winter Homecoming Court. She has participated in the College Credit Plus Program at Kent State and Eastern Gateway Community College.

Delainey is a 4 year letterman in volleyball. She has received the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches’ Association Academic Award, 2020 EOAC second team, and 2020 All District second team. She is also a 3 year letterman in softball and 2 years in basketball.

Outside of school Delainey is employed at B & S Carryout

Delainey plans on attending Kent State University in the nursing program. Her career goal is to become a nurse anesthetist.

Olivia Bachmeier

OXFORD — Olivia Bachmeier of Salem, majoring in Interactive Media Studies , was named to the Miami University fall 2020-21 President’s list.

Miami University students who are ranked in the top 3 percent of undergraduate students within each division for first semester 2020-21 have been named to the President’s list.

Ohio U. grads

ATHENS – More than 2,300 students graduated with bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degrees from Ohio University for fall semester 2020. Students included:

Mariah Blake of Salem graduated with a Master of Business Administration (Accounting Concentration) from OHIO’s College of Business

Kylie Gardner of East Liverpool graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from OHIO’s College of Health Sciences and Professions

Kendra Hoover of East Palestine graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communication majoring in Media Arts and Studies – Integrated Media from OHIO’s Scripps College of Communication

Samantha Kibler of Alliance graduated with a Master of Physician Assistant Practice from OHIO’s College of Health Sciences and Professions

Camelia Post-Abulawi of East Liverpool graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication majoring in Visual Communication – Information Graphics/Publication Design from OHIO’s Scripps College of Communication

Abigail Hoover

ROCHESTER, N.Y.– Abigail Hoover of Salem was named to the Dean’s List at Rochester Institute of Technology for the 2020 Fall Semester. Hoover is in the film and animation program.

St. Paul spellers

SALEM — Sixth-grader Samuel Yakubek (left) will represent St. Paul School in Salem in the Columbiana County Spelling Bee March 3 after winning a spell-off against fellow sixth-grader Kaiden Curtis (right) during the online school bee on the written word “corporate.”

This year will be quite different for spellers at many schools and during the county contest due to Covid-19 and the need for social distancing. Instead of standing on stage, they’ll sit at a computer screen.

As runner-up, Curtis will serve as the St. Paul School alternate for the county bee, which will use an online platform of 30 words.

At St. Paul School, 23 fifth- and sixth-grade students took a written test of 25 words, with 13 qualifying for the school bee, which used the Scripps online platform of 25 words.

There was a tie between Sam and Kaiden, who both scored 19 out of 25. They had a spell-off of written words “detergent,” “snorkels” and “corporate.”

Ronam Booth

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Roman Michael Booth, a junior from Columbiana , was named to the Thiel College Dean’s List for the fall 2020 semester.

Ohio U. honors

ATHENS– More than 8,400 students qualified for the fall semester 2020 Dean’s List at Ohio University, including main and regional campuses.

Due to COVID-19, OHIO students who earned 12 semester hours of credit, including at least six hours attempted for letter grades, with a minimum grade point average of at least 3.5 achieved this distinction.
